Mild Tremor Hits Telangana: NCS Reports 2.5 Magnitude Earthquake

On Monday, Telangana experienced a seismic event with a 2.5 magnitude earthquake hitting the Vikarabad District, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The tremors, recorded at 13:34:02 IST, had a depth of 5 km.

While Telangana is generally considered less earthquake-prone, falling mainly under Zone II, some eastern parts are categorized under Zone III. In India, seismic zones range from Zone II to Zone V, with Zone V being the most susceptible. States like Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and the North East, falling under Zone V, are more prone to earthquakes.

The Richter scale is the standard for measuring earthquake magnitude. These natural events occur due to the release of energy in the lithosphere, generating seismic waves. The recent 2.5 magnitude earthquake in Telangana is considered minor, as magnitudes below 3 are often less perceptible.

Apart from Telangana, other regions like Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and Andaman and Nicobar also reported earthquakes on the same day. Most of these were minor, except for the 4.4 magnitude quake in Andaman and Nicobar Islands at 4:13:17 IST, with a depth of 67 km.
