CM Naidu Orders Heatwave Preparedness Across Andhra Pradesh
As temperatures continue to soar across Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has directed officials to remain fully prepared to tackle severe heatwave conditions and protect people from extreme summer temperatures.
Reviewing the heatwave preparedness measures on Friday, May 22, the Chief Minister instructed authorities to stay alert, continuously monitor weather conditions, and issue regular advisories to residents in vulnerable areas.
With temperatures nearing dangerous levels in several districts, the Andhra Pradesh government has intensified efforts to reduce the impact of extreme weather conditions on public health and daily life.
Government Prioritises Saving Lives
Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu emphasised that protecting human lives remains the top priority of the government during this period of intense heat.
He urged citizens to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary exposure to sunlight, particularly during the hottest hours of the day.
According to the Chief Minister, officials must continuously alert people regarding rising temperatures and ensure they receive timely information on precautionary measures.
“Officials should remain on high alert, closely monitor rising temperatures, and continuously issue public advisories to minimise the impact of severe heatwave conditions across the state,” Naidu said during the official review meeting.
The state administration has been asked to closely observe weather patterns and take preventive measures without delay.
Authorities Asked To Identify High-Risk Areas
During the review meeting, the Chief Minister instructed district authorities to identify regions experiencing the highest temperatures and issue continuous warnings to residents.
Officials were directed to map vulnerable areas and ensure precautionary information reaches the public effectively.
The government believes early warnings and public awareness can significantly reduce heat-related illnesses and casualties.
Authorities have also been instructed to monitor temperature fluctuations district-wise and keep emergency response teams prepared.

Health experts warn that prolonged exposure to extreme heat can lead to dehydration, heatstroke, exhaustion, and other severe medical complications.

Cooling Centres And Heat Shelters Established
As part of the state’s preparedness measures, officials informed the Chief Minister that 1,349 heat shelters and cooling centres have already been established in urban areas.
These centres are aimed at providing temporary relief to people exposed to extreme heat.
Authorities said the cooling shelters would help residents rest, access drinking water, and avoid prolonged exposure to dangerous temperatures.
In addition, the government has made arrangements at 446 traffic junctions to provide shade and temporary relief for motorists, traffic police personnel, and commuters.

Drinking Water, Buttermilk, And ORS To Be Supplied
Recognising the importance of hydration during extreme weather, Chandrababu Naidu stressed the urgent need to ensure the availability of drinking water and cooling beverages at crowded locations.
The Chief Minister directed officials to supply:
- Clean drinking water
- Buttermilk distribution points
- Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) packets
These facilities are to be made available at crowded places, bus stands, public gathering points, and high-footfall areas.
The move is aimed at preventing dehydration and heatstroke among citizens.
Officials were also instructed to make sure no shortage of drinking water occurs in both urban and rural regions.
Where necessary, water tankers are expected to be deployed immediately to affected areas.
District Collectors Asked To Intensify Awareness Campaigns
Chief Minister Naidu directed district collectors to strengthen awareness drives and educate citizens about heatwave safety measures.
The administration plans to use media, local announcements, and social media platforms to continuously spread information regarding precautions people must take.
Awareness messages are expected to include:
- Avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours
- Drinking adequate water regularly
- Wearing loose and light-coloured clothes
- Avoiding strenuous outdoor work

Possibility Of Holidays In Extreme Heat Zones
In a significant step, Chandrababu Naidu also directed local authorities to consider declaring holidays in regions experiencing extreme heat depending on prevailing weather conditions.
The Chief Minister said district administrations should take immediate decisions wherever temperatures pose a serious threat to public health.
This move could particularly benefit school children, daily commuters, and workers in highly affected districts.
Officials have been asked to remain flexible and respond quickly based on changing weather conditions.
Special Care For Animals And Birds
Apart from human safety, the Chief Minister also highlighted the need to protect animals and birds from severe heat.
Naidu suggested placing earthen pots and water troughs in public areas to ensure birds and stray animals have access to drinking water during the scorching summer.
Animal welfare activists welcomed the suggestion, stating that many birds and animals suffer dehydration during extreme temperatures.
Citizens have also been encouraged to keep water bowls outside homes and commercial establishments.

Naidu observed that regions with better groundwater availability and stronger vegetation tend to experience relatively lower temperatures.
He cited Annamayya district as an example where improved vegetation has helped moderate temperatures.
