Andhra Pradesh Government Sets Target of Houses for All Poor by 2029
Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh government has embarked on an ambitious mission to provide housing for all poor residents by 2029. At a recent review meeting of the Housing Department, chaired by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, the government announced plans to build 1.25 lakh houses in the next 100 days and 8.25 lakh houses within a year. This initiative is part of the state’s broader goal to ensure housing for every poor household by 2029.
During the meeting, the government also decided to allocate house sites to new beneficiaries, with villagers receiving three cents of land and urban residents being allotted two cents each. In areas where land was previously acquired for house sites, beneficiaries will be allotted three cents each.
Housing and Information & Public Relations Minister K. Parthasaradhi informed the media that the meeting involved a thorough review of the current housing program status and led to decisions aimed at fulfilling electoral promises. One of the key goals set was the construction of affordable houses for the middle class, lower middle class, and journalists under the Central scheme, Asra. These affordable housing projects will be modeled after successful developments in Hyderabad, such as Sanjeeva Reddy Nagar and Kukatpally Housing Board. To facilitate this, a survey will be conducted to develop an action plan.
The review meeting also highlighted past discrimination towards beneficiaries of the NTR housing scheme, where completed houses were not paid for. The Chief Minister directed officials to make immediate payments to all such beneficiaries. Naidu also responded positively to the proposal of entrusting the construction of houses under the Polavaram R&R project, emphasizing the need to provide basic amenities at all housing sites.
Reflecting on past injustices, Naidu pointed out that over the last five years, the previous government deprived the poor of benefits worth Rs 9,000 to Rs 10,000 crore in housing schemes. Despite claiming to be a people’s government, the YSRCP imposed an economic burden on the poor. Former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, according to Naidu, denied benefits to SCs, STs, and BCs, even though he made lofty promises.
Naidu recalled that during the TDP’s tenure from 2014 to 2019, SCs and STs received an additional Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh each, on top of the unit cost of Rs 2.50 lakh. The Union Budget announcement that houses costing Rs 4 lakh per unit would be sanctioned from March next year was also noted. In light of this, the state plans to identify eligible beneficiaries through a comprehensive survey.
The Housing Department has taken up the construction of 8 lakh houses under the PMAY scheme Asra, with a commitment to complete these houses promptly. Additionally, the government will identify beneficiaries for sanctioning houses under PMAY 2.0.
This comprehensive housing plan represents a significant step towards improving the living standards of the poor in Andhra Pradesh. By ensuring that every poor family has access to decent housing, the government aims to foster a more inclusive and equitable society. The success of this initiative will depend on efficient execution, timely delivery, and the continued commitment of the state administration to prioritize the welfare of its poorest citizens.
In conclusion, the Andhra Pradesh government’s target to provide housing for all poor by 2029 is a landmark initiative that promises to transform the lives of millions. With detailed plans and a clear roadmap, the state is poised to make significant strides towards achieving this ambitious goal. The success of this initiative will not only enhance the living conditions of the poor but also contribute to the overall socio-economic development of Andhra Pradesh.
