Cong Celebrates 30 yrs of Muslim Reservation
in Telangana
Hyderabad: The Congress party is gearing up to commemorate three decades of Muslim reservation in undivided Andhra Pradesh with a series of events culminating in a grand celebration on August 25. This landmark reservation policy, initially introduced through Government Order (GO Ms No 30) on August 25, 1994, by then-Chief Minister Kotla Vijaya Bhaskar Reddy, has been a crucial step in providing equitable opportunities to Muslims and 14 other backward classes.
The reservation policy has had a profound impact over the years. Hyderabad DCC President Mohammed Waliullah Sameer, along with senior leader Mateen Shareef, highlighted the transformative effects of this policy, noting that it has benefited approximately 20 lakh impoverished Muslims with a 4 percent quota in both jobs and education since its inception in 2004-05. Despite facing various legal challenges, the policy has consistently supported the community.
Sameer emphasized the contributions of Mohammed Ali Shabbir, who was instrumental in the push for Muslim reservation. Shabbir’s efforts led to the establishment of the Minorities Welfare Department and the introduction of a dedicated Minority Welfare Budget. The upcoming celebrations will pay tribute to Shabbir’s pivotal role in this endeavor.
In 2004, Congress President Sonia Gandhi included a commitment to 5 percent Muslim reservation in the party’s manifesto. Following the party’s return to power, Chief Minister Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy and Mohammed Ali Shabbir facilitated the implementation of this reservation through GO Ms No 33. Although the reservation was later reduced to 4 percent due to legal battles, its impact on the Muslim community has been significant.
This reservation policy has enabled many Muslims to advance professionally and gain political representation in local bodies. The policy has fostered the development of thousands of professionals and has played a key role in the community’s progress.
The celebration on August 25 will feature a range of activities, including grassroots campaigns, media outreach, and a major event that will showcase a documentary and a photo exhibition. The event will see participation from top Congress leaders and Muslim representatives, reflecting the significance of this milestone.
Further details about the event will be announced soon, as the Congress party prepares to honor the 30-year legacy of Muslim reservation in Telangana and celebrate the positive changes it has brought to the community.
