Hyderabad: Amid rising concerns over Norovirus cases in Hyderabad, the Telangana government has urged the public to stay calm, denying any confirmed cases in the Old City. Dr. B. Ravinder Nayak, the Director of Public Health (DPH) for Telangana, addressed the public’s fears and emphasized that there is no cause for panic. Despite reports of symptoms similar to Norovirus, not a single confirmed case has been reported in the Old City.

Dr. Nayak reassured residents, saying, “I urge families in Old City not to believe rumours that there is an outbreak and that this ailment is fatal.” His statement follows reports from Siasat.com suggesting that doctors had identified potential Norovirus cases in areas like Azampura, Edi Bazar, Purani Haveli, Yakutpura, and Old Malakpet. However, these cases have not been confirmed.

Dr. Nayak explained that while some private hospitals in Old City have reported suspected Norovirus cases, none have been definitively diagnosed. He noted that during the monsoon season, various bacterial and viral infections can spread through close contact, contaminated food, or infected surfaces. “Most of these conditions are treatable, with recovery typically occurring within three days,” he added.

To further alleviate concerns, Dr. Nayak highlighted the preventive measures taken by the government. Local District Medical and Health Officers (DMHO) have been organizing health camps throughout the Old City for the past week. He emphasized that many infections are self-limiting, meaning they resolve on their own within a few days.

Understanding Norovirus

Norovirus, commonly referred to as viral gastroenteritis, causes symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, and rapid dehydration. This can lead to severe risks, including kidney damage, potentially requiring dialysis. Those with diabetes are particularly vulnerable to this highly contagious virus, which spreads through contaminated food, water, surfaces, and close contact with infected individuals.

Dr. MD Fawad Ali, a consultant physician at Princess Durru Shehvar Children’s and General Hospital in Purani Haveli, stressed the importance of personal hygiene and avoiding outside food to prevent the spread of Norovirus. He also underscored the need for improved sanitation measures in residential areas.

In summary, while the reports of Norovirus in Hyderabad have caused concern, the Telangana government and health officials have provided clear reassurances that there is no confirmed outbreak. They continue to monitor the situation closely, taking proactive measures to ensure public health and safety
