BJP/RSS Used Adivasis as Pawns in Jainoor Violence: Telangana Activists
Telangana social activists have alleged that the violence targeting Muslims in Jainoor on September 4, 2023, was a politically motivated attack orchestrated by the BJP and RSS, with Adivasis being used as “pawns” to further their agenda. The violence, which resulted in attacks on Muslim-owned properties, has been linked to broader efforts to assert economic and political dominance in the region.
Political Conspiracy Behind the Attack
Activists claim that the mob violence, in which houses, shops, vehicles, and mosques belonging to Muslims were destroyed, was part of a larger political conspiracy. They allege that the BJP and RSS, along with other supporters, manipulated the Adivasi community into participating in the violence. According to social activist Khalida Parveen, the attack was not just spontaneous but a calculated move to shift blame onto the Adivasis while hiding the involvement of politically motivated forces. Parveen pointed out that the Telangana government failed to take timely action and demands have been raised for the prosecution of those responsible for inciting the violence.
Intelligence Failure and Police Inaction
Many activists have criticized the police and intelligence services for their failure to anticipate the mob violence. They highlighted the social media campaign titled “Hello Adivasi – Chalo Jainoor,” which called for protests on September 4. Despite this clear warning sign, no adequate police presence was deployed in the region. Sandhya, another prominent activist, stressed that the attack demonstrated a complete intelligence failure. Furthermore, activists accused higher-ranking police officers of colluding with the attackers, allowing the violence to unfold without intervention.
Revenge Politics: Blame on BRS
The activists also accused members of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) of working hand-in-glove with the BJP to target Muslims, particularly because many had supported Congress candidates in recent elections. They noted that several BRS workers were involved in the destruction of properties, which included 11 houses, 95 shops, 42 vehicles, and four mosques. The activists condemned the political climate of revenge, which they argued is causing divisions in the community.
Caste, Marriages, and Propaganda
One of the key issues driving the unrest was the use of caste-based propaganda by BJP and RSS members. Activist Sandhya noted that while the Adivasis and Muslims have coexisted peacefully for years, Hindutva forces stirred up tensions by falsely claiming that Muslims were marrying Adivasi women and seizing their lands. The Adivasis, who traditionally discourage inter-caste and inter-faith marriages, were thus manipulated into believing that Muslims were disrupting their community.
Adivasi Traditions and Community Harmony
Contrary to the propaganda, Adivasis and Muslims have historically resolved their disputes amicably through their own community mechanisms, such as the Rai Centers. Activists argue that the recent violence was an attempt by BJP and RSS forces to destroy this harmony and create divisions for political gain. According to activist Sonde Ansar, the government should be implementing land protection laws like the 1/70 Act to safeguard Adivasi lands, rather than turning the issue into a communal dispute.
Police Bias and Selective Prosecution
Activists also raised concerns about police bias in handling the Jainoor violence. They noted that many of the officers present during the attack, including the ACP and CI, were from communities associated with the BJP and RSS. Despite clear evidence, including CCTV footage, the police have yet to arrest the actual perpetrators, many of whom belong to the Vaddera and Vanjari communities. Instead, the authorities have taken action against 17 Muslim youths who had previously been involved in minor clashes. Activists demanded that the police officers responsible for allowing the violence should be suspended and held accountable.
Conclusion
The September 4 violence in Jainoor has exposed deep-rooted political and communal tensions in the region. While Adivasis were manipulated into participating in the attacks, the real culprits appear to be the political forces seeking to gain control of the region. Activists continue to call for justice, demanding the prosecution of those responsible, as well as compensation for the Muslim community. The Telangana government must take swift action to restore communal harmony and ensure that similar incidents are not repeated.
