Hyderabad Mosques Covered for Ganesh Processions
White Cloth Covers on Mosques
In preparation for the Ganesh processions scheduled for Tuesday, September 17, mosques in Hyderabad have been covered with white cloth by law enforcement authorities. This measure is part of efforts to maintain a peaceful environment in the city during the festive period. Mosques situated along the Ganesh procession routes, including the Ek Minar Masjid in Nampally, Masjid e Mehboob Shahi at Mozamjahi Market, and Jamia Masjid in Siddiamber Bazar, have all been covered to ensure there are no disruptions.

Law Enforcement Measures
The Hyderabad police have been tasked with closely monitoring communal elements, rowdy sheeters, and any potential disruptions to communal harmony during the processions. Special branch officials are actively coordinating the movement of the processions, while traffic officers are handling the decongestion of busy lanes to facilitate smooth transit.
Criticism of the Practice
The practice of covering mosques ahead of Hindu festivals has faced criticism. Some view this measure as necessary for maintaining peace, while others argue that it exacerbates communal tensions and fosters mistrust. Critics suggest that such actions imply an expectation of violence, creating a climate of fear and alienation rather than addressing underlying issues. They contend that this approach might be seen as an acquiescence to the potential for communal discord instead of a proactive solution.
Arrangements for Ganesh Immersion
As the major Ganesh processions approach, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has made extensive preparations for the immersion of idols. A total of 73 ponds have been set up, including 27 baby ponds, 24 portable ponds, and 22 escalator ponds designed for idols ranging from 2 to 5 feet in height. These facilities are intended to manage the large volume of Ganesh idols that will be immersed in the city.
Restrictions on Alcohol Sales
In addition to the preparations for the processions, the Hyderabad city police have issued a notice prohibiting the sale and service of alcohol from 6 am on September 17 until 6 pm on September 18. This restriction applies to all liquor outlets, bars, clubs, and restaurants in the city. Violations of this directive will result in legal consequences.
