Telangana Budget 2024: Rs 500 Cr for Metro Extension to Old City
Hyderabad: The Telangana government is set to present its budget for the 2024-25 financial year today, July 25, 2024. Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka will present the budget in the state legislative assembly. This marks the first full budget presented by a Congress-led state government since the formation of Telangana.
Following the expiration of the vote-on-account budget introduced in February after the Congress assumed power in December, this new budget will cover the period from August 2024 to March 2025.
The department-wise allocations are as follows:
- Welfare: Rs 40,000 crore
- Education: Rs 21,292 crore
- Irrigation: Rs 22,301 crore
- Medical and Health: Rs 11,468 crore
- Energy: Rs 16,410 crore
- Home: Rs 9,564 crore
- Roads and Buildings: Rs 5,790 crore
- Industries: Rs 2,762 crore
Between December 28, 2023, and January 6, 2024, 1.90 crore Praja Palana applications were received. The budget proposes:
- Rs 3,065 crore to GHMC
- Rs 500 crore to HMDA
- Rs 3,385 crore to Metro Water Works
- Rs 200 crore to HYDRAA
- Rs 100 crore for Metro extension to the airport
- Rs 200 crore for ORR
- Rs 500 crore for Metro extension to Old City
“The budget is not just a collection of numbers but also an expression of our values and aspirations,” remarked Vikramarka. Since December, Rs 34,579 crore has been spent on various schemes like free bus services, free power up to 200 units, Rythu Bharosa, and rice subsidies.
The Telangana Budget for 2024-25 stands at Rs 2,91,159 crore, with a capital expenditure estimated at Rs 33,487 crore. Additionally, 31,768 recruitment papers have been delivered to various government departments.
The Congress government has paid off Rs 42,892 crore in debt and has incurred a debt of Rs 35,118 crore. Rs 26,000 crore is allocated to the Irrigation department and Rs 40,000 crore for welfare schemes. The total debt on Telangana by December 2023 stands at Rs 6.71 lakh crore.
“The biggest challenge we faced was the debt the state had incurred when Congress came to power,” stated Vikramarka. BRS chief KCR also arrived at the Assembly for the session.
