Telangana High Court Grants Relief to Former BRS MLA Shakeel, Orders Police to Refrain from Arresting Him
In a significant development, the Telangana High Court has intervened in the case involving former BRS MLA Mohammed Shakil Aamir and two others linked to a BMW car crash at Praja Bhavan, Begumpet, in December 2023. The court, on Friday, February 9, suspended the lookout circulars issued against the accused, directing the police not to make any arrests.
The judge’s directive emphasizes that while the accused are not to be arrested immediately, they are required to return to Hyderabad from Dubai and make themselves available for questioning by investigators. The accused had fled to Dubai soon after their involvement in the case came to light.
According to police reports, the accident was allegedly caused by Shakil’s son, Raheel Aamir, who was under the influence of alcohol. Additionally, two police inspectors were arrested for allegedly colluding with the former MLA to conceal the true nature of the incident by falsely implicating an unrelated individual as the driver.
Advocate B Vivekananda, representing the former MLA, argued that the police’s actions were unjust, especially considering that the case involved damage to property and not harm to individuals, which typically doesn’t warrant immediate arrests under the law.
However, the public prosecutor, Palle Nageswara Rao, countered that the involvement of police officers in a conspiracy was a serious matter. Stressing the need for thorough investigation, the prosecutor highlighted that implicating innocent individuals in the case warranted further scrutiny.
In response to these arguments, the judge instructed the accused to cooperate with the police during the investigation process, underscoring the importance of their availability for questioning when required.
