CM Revanth Reddy Urges Action on Delayed Hyderabad Road Work

Slow Progress of SRDP Road Projects

On Friday, September 13, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy expressed strong dissatisfaction with the delayed construction of 811 kilometers of roadways under Hyderabad’s Strategic Road Development Program (SRDP). Launched five years ago, the SRDP was intended to enhance the city’s infrastructure. However, the slow pace of work and poor road maintenance have become major concerns for the CM. He has called for immediate measures to ensure the projects are completed without further delays.

According to a press release from the Telangana Chief Minister’s office, Revanth Reddy directed authorities to take strict action against the contracting agencies that have been responsible for the delay. The contract agreements are set to expire in December this year, and the CM emphasized that all roadworks must be monitored closely and completed as soon as possible.

Accountability and Monitoring of Contractors

To ensure accountability, CM Revanth Reddy requested that officials submit a detailed report within 15 days outlining the contractors who have not completed the works as per schedule. This move aims to ensure the timely completion of the remaining SRDP roadways. The CM made it clear that any officials submitting inaccurate or false reports would also face serious consequences.

During a review meeting held at the Secretariat, the CM addressed various other concerns related to the development of Hyderabad, including footpath repairs, road maintenance, garbage collection, and general cleanliness within the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits.

Promoting Hyderabad as a ‘Clean City’ Like Indore

One of the main priorities outlined by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy was to promote Greater Hyderabad as a model “Clean City,” taking inspiration from Indore, which is widely recognized as India’s cleanest city. Reddy tasked officials from the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) department to visit Indore and study the effective systems and procedures that have been implemented to maintain cleanliness.

In addition to studying Indore’s waste management practices, the CM urged officials to examine how the city has mobilized resources to fund its cleanliness initiatives. Hyderabad’s efforts to maintain clean streets, ensure proper garbage collection, and improve road conditions should reflect the same efficiency as Indore. The use of technology, such as GIS mapping and QR scanning, was suggested by Reddy as a way to enhance monitoring and supervision of garbage collection from households.

Focus on Financial Planning for GHMC Projects

Addressing the financial aspects of urban development, CM Revanth Reddy highlighted the importance of making clear financial plans for the ongoing projects under GHMC. He pointed out that delays in payments and financial challenges should not hinder the progress of the city’s vital infrastructure projects.

The Chief Minister recommended temporary financial adjustments to ensure that pending dues are cleared promptly. However, he also stressed the need for sustainable, long-term solutions for funding city projects. GHMC officials were instructed to look into ways of increasing revenues while also identifying and fixing loopholes in the city’s income generation mechanisms.

Speeding Up Musi Riverfront Development Project

The Musi Riverfront Development Project was another focus of Revanth Reddy’s review. The Telangana CM directed officials to accelerate the rehabilitation and resettlement of displaced persons living in the Musi catchment area. Reddy emphasized that resettlement should be carried out in a fair and just manner, ensuring that no one suffers from injustice as a result of the project.

To ensure the success of the resettlement process, the CM ordered officials to visit the resettlement colonies and assess whether the necessary infrastructure is being created to support the displaced residents. This includes ensuring that essential services such as water supply, sanitation, and housing are available to those being relocated.

Conclusion: A Vision for a Better Hyderabad

Through these directives, CM Revanth Reddy has underscored his commitment to improving the quality of life in Hyderabad. By holding contractors accountable for delays in the SRDP projects, promoting cleanliness on par with Indore, ensuring proper financial planning, and speeding up the Musi Riverfront Development Project, the Chief Minister aims to transform Hyderabad into a cleaner, more efficient, and better-connected city. The CM’s focus on timely action and accountability reflects a broader vision for the city’s growth and development.
