Kamala Harris Urges Gaza Ceasefire Now

Washington: In her first public remarks on a foreign policy issue as the presumptive Democratic nominee for President, US Vice-President Kamala Harris on Thursday called for Israel and Hamas to agree on a ceasefire deal under negotiation. “Let’s get the deal done so we can get a ceasefire to end the war,” Harris stated after a meeting with visiting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

She emphasized the importance of bringing hostages home and providing much-needed relief to the Palestinian people. It was unusual for the Vice-President to address reporters following a White House visit by a foreign leader, a role typically reserved for the President. However, Washington D.C. is experiencing an unusual transition as President Joe Biden has ended his re-election bid and endorsed Vice-President Harris to lead the Democratic ticket while he completes his term.

Harris’ remarks were highly anticipated and aligned closely with the Biden administration’s stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict. She recognized Israel’s right to defend itself but stressed the importance of how it conducts its operations, reflecting widespread concern over the devastation in Gaza.
