Strengthening the Anti-Narcotics Bureau

The Telangana DGP stressed the critical need to expand the operations of the Anti-Narcotics Bureau (ANB) to ensure a more effective fight against drug offences in the state. To achieve this, Dr. Jitender announced that more personnel will be allocated to the ANB. The additional manpower will help the bureau increase its vigilance, improve surveillance, and conduct more comprehensive raids on suspected drug suppliers and traffickers.

According to the DGP, dismantling entire drug supply chains is the top priority for law enforcement. He urged officials to go beyond the arrest of individual suspects and focus on eliminating entire networks to prevent the recurrence of drug-related activities. This approach will also aid in apprehending the higher-ups and financiers who fund and facilitate these illegal operations.

Targeting Educational Institutions and Suspicious Areas

In a bid to protect young people from the dangers of drug abuse, the DGP recommended that law enforcement increase their presence near educational institutions. This step aims to curb drug use among students, who are often vulnerable to drug peddlers. Additionally, Dr. Jitender suggested deploying personnel in other suspicious areas known for drug-related activities, as a more proactive measure to reduce drug offences in Telangana.

The DGP also stressed the importance of stronger collaborations with local communities and educational institutions to create awareness programs about the dangers of drug abuse. By educating the public, particularly young people, the authorities aim to reduce demand for drugs and encourage people to report any suspicious activities to law enforcement.

Ensuring Legal Action Against Foreign Nationals

During the meeting, Dr. Jitender highlighted the need for swift deportation of any foreign nationals found to be involved in drug-related activities in Telangana. The DGP emphasized that foreign nationals participating in drug trafficking or smuggling operations must not only be arrested but also deported in accordance with Indian laws. This strict stance is intended to send a strong message and deter further involvement of international individuals in the state’s drug trade.

Importance of Evidence Gathering for Prosecutions

Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) for Law and Order, Mahesh M. Bhagwat, also participated in the meeting and reinforced the need for meticulous evidence collection during drug busts and arrests. He noted that successful prosecutions are vital to ensuring long-term impacts on drug suppliers and traffickers. “It is crucial not only to apprehend suspects but also to secure their prosecution with sufficient evidence,” Bhagwat remarked.

ADGP Bhagwat also emphasized that weak evidence or procedural errors can result in suspects being acquitted, which can lead to a resurgence of drug-related activities. Therefore, he urged law enforcement officers to ensure that they gather solid, admissible evidence to secure convictions in court.

Training and Resources for Anti-Narcotics Operations

Sandeep Shandilya, the Director of the Anti-Narcotics Bureau (ANB), expressed his appreciation for the additional resources being allocated to the bureau. Shandilya mentioned that these extra personnel would enhance the bureau’s capacity to conduct more thorough investigations, ensuring a wider crackdown on drug offences across Telangana.

The ANB has also been developing new training materials and tools designed to strengthen the prosecution process. These materials will help investigators build stronger cases against suspects, ensuring that those involved in drug offences face the full force of the law. Director Shandilya reiterated the importance of continuous training for ANB personnel, particularly in the area of evidence gathering and prosecution strategies.

A Renewed Commitment to Combatting Drug Crime

With the deployment of additional manpower, enhanced surveillance, and a focus on evidence collection, the Telangana police are renewing their commitment to tackling drug-related crimes. The involvement of high-ranking officials, such as the DGP and ADGP, underscores the seriousness of the issue and the importance of eradicating drug offences from the state. The proactive measures being implemented are expected to yield significant results in curbing drug supply networks and reducing drug abuse in Telangana.
