Heavy rain has brought Mumbai, the financial capital of India, to a standstill, with no respite in sight. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a ‘red’ alert for Mumbai and surrounding areas for Tuesday, July 9. As a precaution, schools and colleges in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Panvel, and rural parts of Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg will remain shut on Tuesday. This applies to primary, secondary, junior, and senior colleges.
Residents of Mumbai woke up to another rain-drenched Tuesday, mirroring Monday’s relentless downpour. The continuous rain caused severe disruptions in suburban train services and flight operations. An elderly woman tragically died from burn injuries due to a short-circuit. The city experienced severe waterlogging, causing traffic chaos and significant inconvenience for residents.
Some areas in Mumbai received over 300 mm of rainfall in just six hours ending at 7 am, leading to inundation of roads and low-lying areas.
Red Alert for Mumbai
The IMD has issued a red alert for Mumbai, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall on Tuesday. BMC commissioner and administrator Bhushan Gagarani urged citizens to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary. The BMC has put all its disaster management teams on high alert. Citizens are advised not to panic and can contact the BMC’s disaster management cell at 1916 for assistance.
The IMD has predicted heavy rainfall at isolated places in Mumbai until July 12, with heavy to moderate rainfall expected in Palghar, Thane, and several other districts across Maharashtra.
Schools and Colleges Closed
Schools and colleges in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts will also remain closed on Tuesday due to the IMD’s ‘red alert’ for very heavy rainfall. The Thane Zilla Parishad has declared a holiday for rural areas as well. The BMC announced late Monday evening that all civic, government, and private schools and colleges in Mumbai will be shut as a precaution.
Mumbai University has postponed all examinations scheduled for Tuesday. Pooja Roudale, director of the examination and evaluation board, said the new dates will be announced soon.
Advisory Issued
The Mumbai division of the Central Railways has advised passengers to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.
“In view of tomorrow’s forecast for heavy rains in Mumbai & Thane Districts, passengers are requested to refrain from travelling unless unavoidable,” it said.
Disruption of Train, Flight, and Bus Services
Central Railway services were significantly disrupted due to rain-induced waterlogging, causing severe inconvenience for passengers. Many out-station trains heading to Mumbai were also stranded.
Flight services at Mumbai airport were severely impacted by low visibility, leading to runway operations being shut for over an hour and approximately 50 flights being cancelled. Of these, 42 were operated by IndiGo and six by Air India.
During evening rush hours, BEST diverted its bus services via alternate routes due to waterlogging in low-lying areas like Parel, Gandhi Market, Sangam Nagar, and Malad subway.
Mumbai Rain Live: Between 8 am and 11 pm on Monday, the island city, eastern and western areas recorded an average rainfall of 116.07 mm, 84.77 mm and 109.55 mm, respectively.
Due to heavy rain forecast in Mumbai, Mumbai Suburbs, Thane, Raigad, Palghar, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts, all exams scheduled for today (July 9, 2024) at the University of Mumbai have been postponed. New dates will be announced soon: University of Mumbai.
