Telangana: TGSPDCL Identifies 12,692 Damaged, Unsafe Transformers
The Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL) has identified 12,692 damaged, broken, and rusted poles, along with 1,300 unsafe and unfenced distribution transformers within its jurisdiction. This alarming discovery was made during a comprehensive survey that began on June 24, covering 3,380 feeders across 44 towns and cities in the combined districts of Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Medak, Mahabubnagar, and Nalgonda.
These compromised assets present a significant risk of electrocution to the public. To mitigate this danger, TGSPDCL plans to undertake rectification works on a war footing. The survey revealed 1,846 defective poles in the Metro Zone, 3,386 in Rangareddy Zone, 6,800 in Medchal Zone, and 660 in the Rural Circle.
TGSPDCL officials meticulously mapped their assets, which included poles, distribution transformers, conductors, ring main units, and other essential equipment. The survey’s scope encompassed detailed assessments by teams led by assistant engineers, covering each pole and transmission cable. In total, the survey documented 3,285 feeders and 4.46 lakh survey points, incorporating poles, dynamic thermal rating structures, and conductors through GIS mapping.
Chairman and Managing Director of TGSPDCL, Musharraf Ali Faruqui, has directed officials to commence the necessary rectification works immediately. The SPDCL management has allocated Rs. 25.50 crore for these repairs. Faruqui emphasized the importance of documenting the repairs by taking photos and updating GIS coordinates in the TGSPDCL GIS Asset Inspection & Maintenance System (TGAIMS) mobile application. This step is intended to prevent misappropriation of funds and ensure accountability.
The TGAIMS mobile application has been developed as part of the effort to strengthen the electricity distribution system. This app aids in the technical identification of faults within the 33 kV, 11 kV, and LT networks, covering poles, distribution transformers, conductors, ring main units (RMUs), and other equipment.
The survey and subsequent rectification plan are critical steps in ensuring the safety and reliability of the power distribution network in Telangana. The identification of 12,692 damaged poles and 1,300 unsafe transformers highlights the urgent need for infrastructure improvements. The implementation of TGAIMS and the rigorous documentation process will not only enhance the efficiency of repairs but also ensure transparency and accountability in the use of allocated funds.
TGSPDCL’s proactive approach in addressing these issues underscores its commitment to public safety and the continuous improvement of the power distribution system. As the rectification works progress, the residents of Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Medak, Mahabubnagar, and Nalgonda can expect a safer and more reliable electricity supply.
Ensuring the stability and safety of power distribution infrastructure is crucial for the region’s development. The timely identification and rectification of these issues will help prevent accidents and improve the overall efficiency of the electricity distribution network. TGSPDCL’s efforts in this regard are commendable, reflecting a proactive stance in maintaining and upgrading essential public services.
In conclusion, the TGSPDCL’s initiative to identify and rectify damaged and unsafe power distribution assets is a significant move towards enhancing public safety and infrastructure reliability. With allocated funds and a robust documentation process in place, the rectification works are set to commence promptly, ensuring a safer and more efficient power distribution network for the people of Telangana.
