Umrah Step-by-Step Guide
1. Preparation Before Departure
- Ihram Clothing: Men should prepare the two white sheets of cloth (Rida and Izar). Women should wear modest, loose-fitting clothing covering the entire body except the face and hands.
- Intention (Niyyah): Make the intention to perform Umrah. This can be done before leaving for the airport or while boarding the plane.
2. Miqat
- Miqat Point: While on your way to Makkah, you will reach a designated Miqat (entry point) where you must enter the state of Ihram. This is a spiritual state of purity.
- Donning Ihram: Change into the Ihram garments.
- Niyyah and Talbiyah: Make the intention for Umrah and recite the Talbiyah: “Labbayka Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayka La Sharika Laka Labbayk, Innal-Hamda Wannimata Laka Wal-Mulk, La Sharika Lak.”
3. Arrival in Makkah
- Travel to Your Hotel: Once you arrive in Makkah, check into your hotel and rest if needed.
- Perform Ghusl (Full Body Wash): It’s recommended to perform Ghusl before heading to the Haram.
4. Tawaf
- Enter Masjid al-Haram: Enter the Grand Mosque with humility and respect, preferably through the Bab as-Salam gate.
- Istilam (Touching the Black Stone): If possible, touch the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad) or raise your hand towards it and say “Bismillah, Allahu Akbar”.
- Circumambulate the Kaaba: Perform seven anti-clockwise circuits around the Kaaba. Each circuit starts and ends at the Black Stone. Make Dua and prayers during Tawaf.
- Prayer after Tawaf: After completing Tawaf, pray two Rak’ahs at the Maqam Ibrahim if possible, or anywhere in the mosque.
5. Sa’i
- Safa to Marwah: Walk between the hills of Safa and Marwah seven times. Begin at Safa and end at Marwah. The distance between the two hills is approximately 450 meters.
- Recite Duas: Recite prayers and supplications during Sa’i.
6. Halq or Taqsir
- Men: Shave (Halq) or trim (Taqsir) the hair on the head.
- Women: Trim a small portion of hair (about the length of a fingertip) from the end of their hair.
7. Completion of Umrah
- Exit Ihram: After Halq or Taqsir, you can change out of Ihram garments and wear regular clothing.
- Continue Praying and Performing Nawafil: Spend your remaining time in Makkah performing additional Tawaf, praying, and making Duas at the Haram.
Additional Tips:
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water, especially if performing Umrah during warmer months.
- Be Patient: The Haram can be very crowded, so be patient and considerate of others.
- Stay Connected: Keep in touch with your group or family members to avoid getting lost.
- Learn the Duas: Familiarize yourself with the Duas and supplications for each step of Umrah to enhance your spiritual experience.
By following these steps, you can perform Umrah with sincerity and devotion, ensuring a spiritually enriching experience.
