J&K: 3 Labourers Killed in Terrorist Attack
Terror Strikes Ganderbal District
Srinagar: In a tragic incident on Sunday, at least three labourers lost their lives and four others, including locals, sustained injuries during a terrorist attack on a labourers’ camp in Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir. This violent incident marks another chapter in the escalating tensions in the region. The attack took place at around 8:15 p.m., causing chaos and fear among the workers present at the camp.
The labourers, who were engaged in a key infrastructure project in the area, faced the assault that left two dead on the spot, while a third succumbed to injuries after being rushed to the hospital. The injured were taken to the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) in Srinagar for treatment, where they are currently under medical supervision.
Security Measures and Response
Following the attack, the army and police swiftly responded to the scene. The area around the labourers’ camp has been cordoned off as authorities launched an extensive search operation to trace the attackers. The focus is on ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to justice, while additional security has been reinforced in the region to prevent further incidents.
The incident has sent shockwaves across the region, particularly as it comes just two days after another non-local individual, Ashok Chouhan from Bihar, was killed by terrorists in the Zainpora area of Shopian district. The pattern of targeting non-local workers has raised serious concerns about the safety of those who come to Jammu and Kashmir for employment opportunities.
Chief Minister Condemns the Attack
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the Ganderbal terrorist attack, calling it a “dastardly and cowardly” act. In a statement posted on his social media platform X, he expressed deep sorrow over the loss of innocent lives. “Very sad news of a dastardly & cowardly attack on non-local labourers at Gagangir in the Sonamarg region. These people were working on a key infrastructure project in the area. 2 have been killed & 2-3 more have been injured in this militant attack. I strongly condemn this attack on unarmed innocent people & send my condolences to their loved ones,” he said.
In a follow-up message, the Chief Minister highlighted that the casualty figures could change as many injured individuals, both local and non-local, are receiving treatment. He added, “Praying that the injured make a full recovery as the more seriously injured are being referred to SKIMS, Srinagar.”
Increased Terror Activity in Kashmir Valley
The recent attack on labourers in Ganderbal is part of a broader trend of increased terrorist activities in the Kashmir Valley. This surge has been characterized by a rise in actions involving foreign mercenaries, particularly in the hilly districts of the Jammu division, including Poonch, Rajouri, Doda, Kathua, Udhampur, and Reasi. These regions have witnessed a series of hit-and-run attacks targeting the army, other security forces, and civilians.
In anticipation of potential threats, over 4,000 commandos trained in mountain warfare and counter-terrorism have been deployed to these vulnerable areas. Drawn from elite Para commando units, these forces are working alongside the Indian Army and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to prevent terrorist ambushes and secure the densely forested regions where militants often seek refuge.
Empowering Local Defense Committees
To strengthen local security, authorities have equipped village defence committees (VDCs) with automatic weapons. These VDCs consist of civilian volunteers trained to protect their communities from terrorist threats, particularly in remote and difficult-to-access areas of Jammu. The deployment of VDCs aims to create a layer of defense that can respond to sudden attacks before formal security forces arrive.
The emphasis on empowering local defense mechanisms reflects the complexity of the security challenges in Jammu and Kashmir, where geographical terrain often gives militants an advantage. By equipping villagers with the means to defend themselves, the government hopes to reduce the risk of civilian casualties and strengthen the overall security grid in the region.
Ongoing Tensions Ahead of Assembly Elections
The resurgence of terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir comes at a time when the region is gearing up for Assembly elections. The recent incidents, including the attack in Ganderbal, have added to the tensions and uncertainty surrounding the political climate. Authorities are on high alert to prevent further disruptions as they aim to maintain stability and security during the election period.
Focus on Safety and Security
As the investigation into the Ganderbal attack continues, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of both local and non-local workers in the region. The coordinated efforts between the army, police, and local defense groups underscore the seriousness with which the authorities are addressing the threat. The incident has highlighted the ongoing challenges in maintaining peace in the region and the need for a robust response to counter terrorism.
