Intense tremors rattled the Delhi-National Capital Region following a powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake that struck Southern Xinjiang, China, on Monday night. The National Center for Seismology reported the earthquake with details: “Earthquake of Magnitude: 7.2, Occurred on 22-01-2024, 23:39:11 IST, Lat: 40.96 & Long: 78.30, Depth: 80 Km, Location: Southern Xinjiang, China.”

The aftermath saw numerous injuries and house collapses along the Kyrgyzstan-Xinjiang border. The Xinjiang railway department promptly halted operations, with 27 trains suspended post-quake. Chinese media disclosed 14 aftershocks, with the largest reaching a magnitude of 5.3, recorded near the epicenter in Wushi County, China’s northwestern region.

Emergency response services were activated by Chinese authorities, coordinating relief efforts by providing essential items like cotton tents, coats, quilts, mattresses, folding beds, and heating stoves. In Kazakhstan, the emergencies ministry reported the earthquake at a magnitude of 6.7. Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city, witnessed residents fleeing their homes despite the cold weather, some in pajamas and slippers.

Approximately 30 minutes later, aftershocks were felt in Uzbekistan, though no injuries or damages were reported in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. The seismic event prompted swift actions from multiple departments, showcasing collaborative relief efforts in response to this natural disaster
