Telangana CM Urges AMRUT Inclusion
Telangana CM Urges Inclusion of CSMP in AMRUT 2.0
Hyderabad’s Outdated Sewerage System
Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy recently highlighted the pressing need for an updated sewerage system in Hyderabad and surrounding municipalities. Speaking on October 7, 2024, CM Revanth appealed to Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal Khattar, to include the Comprehensive Sewerage Master Plan (CSMP) under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0. This inclusion, he argued, would significantly enhance Hyderabad’s sewerage infrastructure, which has remained outdated for years despite the city’s rapid growth.
The Telangana government has already taken proactive steps, with the Comprehensive Sewerage Master Plan addressing the city’s inadequate sewerage systems. CM Revanth stated that a Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been prepared for the CSMP, which aims to revamp sewerage infrastructure across Hyderabad and 27 nearby municipalities. The project spans a massive 7,444 kilometers and is estimated to cost Rs 17,212.69 crore. Given its scale and importance, CM Revanth urged the Union Minister to treat it as a special project under AMRUT 2.0, underscoring its critical role in modernizing the city’s sanitation and waste management systems.
Musi River Sewage Management
The issue of untreated sewage flowing into the Musi River has long been a concern for the citizens of Hyderabad. To tackle this, CM Revanth revealed that a DPR has been developed for managing the sewage discharge into the river. Currently, around 110 kilometers of untreated sewage flows into the Musi River, posing a significant environmental and public health risk.
To combat this, the Comprehensive Sewerage Master Plan outlines the construction of trunk sewers, large-sized box drains, and new sewage treatment plants. These facilities will help process and treat sewage before it enters the river, ensuring cleaner water and a healthier ecosystem. The estimated cost for this aspect of the project is Rs 4,000 crore. The Telangana CM urged swift approval from the Union government to initiate these works, highlighting the environmental benefits and the improved quality of life for Hyderabad’s residents.
Expansion of Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase 2
In addition to the sewerage system, CM Revanth also emphasized the need for the expansion of Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase 2. The growing city demands better public transport infrastructure, and the expansion aims to cater to this need. The project is estimated to cost Rs 24,269 crore and covers several crucial corridors in Hyderabad.
According to CM Revanth, the Detailed Project Reports for various metro corridors have been completed. Some of the significant routes include the 36.8 km stretch from Nagole to Shamshabad Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, the 11.6 km link between Raidurgam and Kokapet Neopolis, and the 13.4 km stretch from Miyapur to Patancheru. Other important sections include the MG Bus Station to Chandrayangutta (7.5 km) and LB Nagar to Hayathnagar (7.1 km). In total, the expansion will cover 76.4 kilometers, transforming the city’s public transport landscape.
CM Revanth requested Union Minister Khattar to expedite the necessary approvals for these expansions, as they are essential for accommodating the city’s growing population and reducing traffic congestion. The Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase 2 expansion, alongside the Comprehensive Sewerage Master Plan, demonstrates Telangana’s commitment to improving its urban infrastructure.
Mr. Revanth Reddy informed Mr. Khattar that a detailed project report was prepared for the sewerage master plan covering Hyderabad and 27 municipalities near by. The plan encompassed an area of 7,444 km with an estimated cost of ₹17,212.69 crore.
Importance of AMRUT 2.0 for Telangana
AMRUT 2.0 is a central government initiative aimed at improving urban infrastructure, and Telangana’s inclusion in this mission is crucial for addressing the state’s urban challenges. CM Revanth’s appeal to include the Comprehensive Sewerage Master Plan in AMRUT 2.0 underscores the state’s determination to upgrade essential services. From modern sewerage systems to expanded metro networks, Telangana is positioning itself for significant urban transformation.
The Comprehensive Sewerage Master Plan will not only bring environmental benefits but also enhance the quality of life for millions of people living in Hyderabad and its surrounding municipalities. If included in AMRUT 2.0, the state will receive central assistance, speeding up the implementation of these critical infrastructure projects.
By focusing on sewerage and public transport, Telangana’s Comprehensive Sewerage Master Plan and Metro Rail Phase 2 expansion reflect the state’s forward-thinking approach to urban development. With proper support from the Union government, these projects could reshape Hyderabad’s future, making it a cleaner, more efficient, and sustainable city.
