BC Scholarships Non Payment Criticized
Harish Rao Criticizes Telangana Government Over BC Scholarships
Hyderabad: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLA T Harish Rao expressed strong criticism toward the Telangana Congress government on Tuesday, October 15, over the non-payment of BC scholarships under the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule BC Overseas Education Fund Scheme. This scheme was originally introduced by former Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) to help economically disadvantaged students pursue higher education abroad. Harish Rao questioned the delay in releasing funds to 65 BC students who had already been granted financial assistance under this program.
Questioning Congress Government’s Commitment
Harish Rao raised concerns about the Telangana Congress government’s commitment to BC scholarships. He specifically questioned whether the Congress administration plans to discontinue the overseas scholarship scheme designed by KCR, which has been a critical resource for underprivileged students aspiring for international education. “Why is the Congress government not releasing funds to these deserving students?” he asked.
Rao further criticized the government’s actions, pointing out that while “renaming places” may be simple, it is much harder to deliver on promises made to the people of Telangana. His comments targeted the unfulfilled assurances made to the Backward Classes (BC) community, especially in light of the government’s earlier declarations.
Unfulfilled Promises and Growing Frustration
The BC scholarships non-payment issue has led to widespread frustration among affected students and BC leaders. Harish Rao reminded the Congress government about the BC declaration that was announced in Kamareddy district, emphasizing the lack of progress. “What happened to the promise to implement the BC sub-plan in the first assembly meeting?” he questioned, highlighting the government’s inaction.
BC Leader R Krishnaiah Threatens Protest
As the scholarships remain unpaid, the former Member of Parliament and Backward Class leader R Krishnaiah announced his intention to protest. He has planned a demonstration in front of the Mandal Revenue Office on October 22, demanding immediate action from the Telangana government. Krishnaiah emphasized the need for the scholarship amount to be increased from Rs 5,500 to Rs 10,000, citing the difficulties students face in managing their education expenses.
Krishnaiah’s statement also pointed out the challenges faced by students due to the non-payment of scholarships. Many students, despite gaining admission to higher education programs, are struggling to continue their studies. Even those who have secured jobs are unable to submit their certificates due to financial constraints. He urged the Telangana government to release the allocated budget in two stages to ease the burden on the students.
Support from Private Colleges Management
In a related development, the Telangana Private Degree & PG Colleges Management Association held discussions with Krishnaiah, seeking his support in securing the overdue fees from the state government. The college managements highlighted their struggles, including difficulties in paying teachers’ salaries and covering operational costs due to the non-payment of scholarships.
Krishnaiah extended his support, emphasizing the need for timely release of funds to ensure students and educational institutions do not suffer further. He stressed that the BC scholarships non-payment issue needs immediate resolution for the welfare of students who rely on these schemes to pursue their education.
Call for Immediate Action
The non-payment of BC scholarships has become a significant issue in Telangana, drawing criticism from political leaders and student groups. Harish Rao’s remarks reflect a growing demand for accountability from the Congress-led Telangana government, urging them to honor their commitments to the BC community and ensure that deserving students receive the support they need to pursue their dreams. As the protest date nears, pressure continues to build on the Telangana administration to take action and address the grievances of students and educational institutions.
