Delhi Haryana Borders Fortified Ahead of Farmer Unions March

Authorities in Delhi and Haryana have bolstered border security with neighboring states in anticipation of the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march by farmer unions slated for Tuesday. Concrete blocks, road spike barriers, and barbed wires have been deployed along with thousands of police personnel. Prohibitory orders have been imposed to prevent protesters from entering the national capital.

Opposition and Farmer Groups Criticize Restrictions

The move to block borders has drawn criticism from opposition parties and farmer groups. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra questioned the deployment of road spike barriers, while Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann likened the situation to the India-Pakistan border. The Samyukta Kisan Morcha condemned the restrictions, calling them undemocratic.

Government Defends Restrictions

Authorities defended the measures, citing the prolonged agitation against the now-repealed farm laws in 2020. The Samyukta Kisan Morcha and other farmer associations from UP, Haryana, and Punjab have organized the protest to press for their demands, including a law guaranteeing minimum support prices for crops.

Heightened Security Measures

Haryana authorities have sealed the border with Punjab and implemented extensive security measures in anticipation of potential disruptions. Mobile internet services and bulk SMS have been suspended in seven districts. Water cannons, anti-riot vehicles, and barricades have been deployed at key locations.

Dialogue Amid Tensions

Despite the tensions, the Centre has invited farmer unions for a meeting on February 12 to discuss their demands. Union ministers will engage in talks with representatives of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha.

Preparation by Delhi Police

Delhi Police have deployed over 5,000 personnel along the borders with Haryana and UP. Prohibitory orders are in place to prevent gatherings and the entry of protestors. Police are coordinating with counterparts in neighboring states to maintain law and order.

Community Engagement

Police have been engaging with local leaders, urging them not to participate in the march. Restrictions on vehicular movement and road closures have been implemented in border areas to prevent the influx of protestors.
