Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky shrugged off US President Joe Biden’s slip-up, where he mistakenly called Zelensky “Putin.” Speaking at Shannon Airport in Ireland, Zelensky remarked, “We can forget some mistakes. The United States has given a lot of support to Ukrainians.”
Later, Zelensky will meet Irish leader Simon Harris, their first bilateral meeting on Irish soil. He thanked Ireland for supporting Ukrainian refugees since the Russian invasion began and hosting them generously. Harris is expected to reiterate Ireland’s support for Ukraine’s EU membership bid.
Zelensky’s visit follows his trip to Washington for NATO’s 75th-anniversary summit, where Biden made the gaffe. While introducing Zelensky, Biden accidentally said, “President Putin,” before correcting himself: “President Zelensky. I’m so focused on beating Putin.” The mistake sparked further discussions about Biden’s age and mental sharpness, though he remains committed to running for another term in November.
