Telangana Government to Cover Power Bills for All Government Schools: CM Revanth Reddy
Hyderabad: On Friday, August 2, Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy made a significant announcement that the state government will cover the entire cost of electricity bills for all government schools. Speaking at the “Aatmeeya Sammelan” held at LB Stadium in Hyderabad, Reddy also stated that women’s self-help groups (SHG) will be engaged to manage and pay sanitation workers and sweepers in government schools. This initiative aims to relieve teachers from the financial burden of paying for these services out of their own pockets.
Addressing a gathering of government teachers who received promotions, Reddy emphasized the importance of their role in educating children from poor and marginalized sections of society. He urged the teachers to work diligently to improve the quality of education, stating that their efforts are crucial for the future of Telangana.
Concerns Over Decreased Enrollments
Expressing concern over a significant decrease in enrollments in government schools by 200,000 students this year, Reddy highlighted the disparity between government and private school enrollments. While 2.6 million students are enrolled in 30,000 government schools in Telangana, 3.3 million students are enrolled in private schools. Reddy pointed out that teachers in government schools are more qualified than their counterparts in private institutions, yet the lack of basic facilities and infrastructure has led to this situation.
Budget Allocation for Education
Reddy revealed that the government has proposed to allocate ₹21,000 crore (7.3% of the total budget) for education in this year’s budget. He mentioned that the government initially aimed to allocate 10% of the total budget for education but had to adjust due to various commitments made to the public.
“The future of Telangana is in your hands, to educate the children coming from SC, ST, BC, and minority sections. Only then the true aspirations of Telangana can be achieved,” Reddy told the teachers. He underscored the vital role teachers play in shaping the future of the state and encouraged them to continue their dedicated efforts.
Promoting Sports and Youth Development
In addition to educational initiatives, Reddy announced plans to construct stadiums in every mandal headquarters to encourage children to participate in sports. The government has taken a policy decision to incentivize youth to win medals in sports by offering cash prizes and job opportunities. This move aims to promote a culture of sports and physical activity among the youth in Telangana.
Addressing Teachers’ Issues
Reddy highlighted that approximately 25,000 government school teachers were promoted after nine years, and with the inclusion of Gurukul teacher promotions, the total number of promotions could reach up to 30,000. He assured the teachers that all their other issues would be addressed and resolved. The Telangana government is committed to listening to and resolving the concerns of teachers to ensure a conducive working environment.
The chief minister also criticized the previous BRS government, claiming that the condition of government employees had deteriorated under their administration. Reddy’s commitment to improving the education sector and addressing the issues faced by teachers is a significant step towards enhancing the quality of education in Telangana.
Future Plans
Reddy’s announcement marks a pivotal moment for government schools in Telangana. By covering electricity bills and engaging SHGs for sanitation management, the government aims to create a better working environment for teachers and improve the overall infrastructure of schools. These initiatives are expected to boost enrollment in government schools and ensure that children from all sections of society have access to quality education.
The focus on sports and youth development further complements the government’s efforts to provide holistic education and opportunities for the youth. With the proposed budget allocation and policy decisions, the Telangana government is making strides towards achieving its educational goals and fostering a brighter future for the state’s children.
