Congress MLA Danam Nagender’s Threats Cause Uproar in Telangana Assembly
Hyderabad: The final day of the Telangana assembly budget session witnessed a heated altercation as Congress Khairatabad MLA Danam Nagender directed abusive and threatening language at BRS MLAs who interrupted his speech on the budget allocation for Hyderabad. Nagender’s outburst included threatening to peel the skin off his opponents, creating a significant stir in the assembly.
During his speech, Nagender lashed out at the BRS MLAs, saying, “Ey moosko voyi. Nee amma baita kooda tiraganiyya mee kodukulani. Emanukuntunnaru ra meeru? Tolu teestha kodaka okkokkanidi (thrice). Em arey, baita kooda tiraraniyyanu chepputhunna ninnu…aa…raa ra.” Translated roughly, this means, “Hey shut up. I won’t let you roam safely outside. What are you guys thinking? I’ll peel your skin off (thrice),” followed by a challenge to fight one of the BRS members.
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, present during the incident, appeared to ignore the commotion as he focused on his papers. The disruptive behavior did not go unnoticed by AIMIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi, who stood up to address the Speaker. Owaisi condemned Nagender’s abusive language, especially the references to mothers, and insisted that such conduct was inappropriate. He urged Nagender to maintain self-control despite provocations and demanded an apology.
In response, Nagender defended his actions by stating that he was provoked by the abusive language used by the BRS MLAs against him. He mentioned his longstanding tenure as an MLA and claimed that he had always maintained decorum in the assembly. Nagender then offered an apology, saying, “If anybody was hurt by his words, I apologise.”
Later, addressing the house, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy criticized the BRS MLAs for attempting to silence Nagender and interrupting his speech. Reddy highlighted Nagender’s deep connection with Hyderabad, noting his six-time representation as an MLA and his extensive knowledge of the city’s issues. “Danam Nagender was born here and represented the state six times as an MLA. He knows every street in the city and understands the problems of the people very well. He represents the people from Asif Nagar to Khairatabad,” Reddy remarked.
The incident brought to light the tensions and challenges within the assembly, particularly the struggle to maintain decorum and respect during heated debates. Nagender’s outburst and the subsequent reactions underscore the importance of parliamentary conduct and the need for legislators to navigate provocations with dignity and restraint.
Reactions and Aftermath
The incident has sparked widespread reactions from political observers and the public alike. Many have expressed concern over the deteriorating standards of discourse in the assembly and the potential impact on public perception of legislative bodies. The assembly’s proceedings are expected to be conducted with a level of decorum that reflects the seriousness and responsibility of the roles played by elected officials. The use of abusive language and threats undermines this expectation and can erode public trust.
Furthermore, Nagender’s apology, though significant, also raises questions about the measures in place to address and prevent such behavior in the future. The incident serves as a reminder of the need for clear guidelines and consequences for conduct within legislative assemblies to uphold the dignity of the institution and its members.
Moving Forward
In the wake of the incident, it is crucial for the assembly to reflect on the standards of behavior expected from its members and to reinforce the importance of respectful and constructive discourse. The leadership, including the Speaker and senior legislators, plays a vital role in setting the tone for debates and ensuring that all members adhere to the established norms of conduct.
Moreover, the incident highlights the broader issue of political culture and the ways in which personal attacks and inflammatory language can detract from meaningful discussions on policy and governance. As Telangana continues to navigate its political landscape, fostering a culture of respect and collaboration within the assembly will be essential for addressing the state’s challenges and advancing the well-being of its citizens.
