Who Is Imane Khelif? The Algerian Boxer at the Centre of Gender Controversy at Paris Olympics
Algerian boxer Imane Khelif is making headlines at the Paris Olympics 2024, not only for her performance but also due to a significant controversy surrounding her participation in the women’s 66kg boxing event. The debate intensified following Khelif’s recent match against Italian boxer Angela Carini, who withdrew after just 46 seconds, citing concerns for her safety. This incident is not the first time Khelif has been at the center of such a debate, as she was previously disqualified from the 2023 World Championships over gender eligibility issues.
Who Is Imane Khelif?
Imane Khelif, 25, hails from Tiaret, Algeria, and is currently serving as a UNICEF ambassador. Despite her father’s disapproval of women in boxing, Khelif pursued her passion with the ambition to inspire future generations by winning a gold medal on a global stage.
Khelif began her professional boxing career at the 2018 World Championships, where she finished in 17th place. Her performance in the 2019 World Championships saw her drop to 19th place. At the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, she was defeated by Ireland’s Kellie Harrington in the quarter-finals. Despite these setbacks, Khelif achieved notable successes by securing second place at the Women’s World Boxing Championships, followed by gold medals at the 2022 African Championships, Mediterranean Games, and 2023 Arab Games.
The 2023 World Boxing Championships Controversy
The controversy surrounding Khelif first emerged during the 2023 World Boxing Championships in New Delhi. IBA President Umar Kremlev announced that some athletes, including Khelif, were barred from competition based on DNA tests revealing XY chromosomes, indicating they did not meet the criteria for female competitors. The Algerian Olympic Committee cited “medical reasons” for her disqualification, while Algerian media reported high testosterone levels as the cause.
Khelif expressed her frustration, accusing others of conspiring against Algerian athletes. She claimed, “There are some countries that did not want Algeria to win a gold medal. This is a conspiracy and a big conspiracy, and we will not be silent about it.”
The International Olympic Committee’s Stance
In response to the controversy at the Paris Olympics, International Olympic Committee spokesperson Mark Adams confirmed that Khelif’s passport lists her as female, allowing her to compete in the women’s 66kg division. “Everyone competing in the women’s category is complying with the competition eligibility rules,” Adams stated. The IOC’s position is that athletes competing in the women’s category must adhere to the gender listed on their official documentation.
This stance has drawn criticism from prominent female boxing champions, including Claressa Shields and Ebanie Bridges, who have voiced concerns about the fairness and safety of the ruling. On the other hand, the Algerian Olympic Committee has publicly supported Khelif, denouncing the negative reports against her.
Khelif’s Performance and Ongoing Debate
Despite the controversy, Imane Khelif made a powerful statement at the 2024 Paris Olympics by defeating Italy’s Angela Carini in just 46 seconds in the women’s 145lb category. This swift victory has amplified the ongoing debate about gender eligibility and fairness in women’s sports.
The situation remains contentious, with Khelif’s participation highlighting broader issues related to gender, fairness, and safety in competitive sports. As the debate continues, the focus on Khelif underscores the need for clear and fair regulations that address these complex issues in a balanced and equitable manner.
