Marco Rubio Begins India Tour

Marco Rubio To Visit India

Marco Rubio is set to begin a four-day diplomatic visit to India on Saturday, May 23, with Kolkata serving as the first destination of his official tour.

The visit is being viewed as politically and diplomatically significant, especially as it comes shortly after the formation of a new government in West Bengal following the recent Assembly elections.

Rubio’s trip will mark the first visit by a US Secretary of State to Kolkata in 14 years.

First US Secretary Of State Visit Since 2012

Rubio will become the first American Secretary of State to visit Kolkata since Hillary Clinton travelled to the city in May 2012.

During Clinton’s earlier visit, she had held an important meeting with Mamata Banerjee at the historic Writers’ Buildings shortly after Banerjee’s government came to power, ending the Left Front’s long rule in the state.

Visit To Mother House Planned

According to sources, Rubio is expected to arrive in Kolkata from Sweden early in the morning and visit the Mother House, the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity founded by Mother Teresa.

The visit to Mother House is being seen as a symbolic gesture reflecting humanitarian and cultural ties between India and the United States.

Historic US Diplomatic Presence In Kolkata

Kolkata occupies a special place in American diplomatic history in India. The city hosts one of the oldest US consular establishments in the world and the first American consulate in India.

Historical records state that in 1792, then US President George Washington appointed Benjamin Joy as the first American Consul to Kolkata.

Over the decades, the US diplomatic mission in Kolkata evolved into a major regional centre overseeing American interests across eastern and northeastern India.

Today, the US Consulate in Kolkata supervises diplomatic operations in multiple states including West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Jharkhand, and Manipur.

Strategic Importance Of Eastern India

Political analysts believe Rubio’s decision to begin his India tour from Kolkata underlines the increasing geopolitical importance of eastern and northeastern India within the broader Indo-Pacific strategy.

The visit also comes at a time when the United States is seeking stronger strategic partnerships across Asia amid rising global uncertainties and ongoing tensions in West Asia.

Apart from Kolkata, Rubio’s India itinerary includes visits to Agra, Jaipur, and New Delhi between May 23 and May 26.

Strengthening Indo-US Relations

The visit is expected to focus on strengthening diplomatic, economic, and strategic cooperation between India and the United States. Discussions may also cover trade, regional security, technology partnerships, and Indo-Pacific collaboration.

Rubio’s India tour is likely to further deepen bilateral ties between the two democracies as both nations continue expanding cooperation in multiple sectors.
