Pothole repairs in Telangana

9911 sqm of Potholes Repaired in Telangana

Hyderabad: The Telangana state government informed the High Court that it has repaired 9,911 square meters of potholes in the last three months and a total of 278,026 square meters over the past six months. This update was part of a public interest litigation concerning road conditions and potholes. The detailed report from the Chief Engineer of the Roads and Buildings Department included a district-wise breakdown of these repairs.

The Chief Engineer emphasized that pothole filling is an ongoing process. To improve the management of pothole complaints, the government is developing an app in partnership with Telangana Technology Services (TGTS) to help citizens report potholes and monitor repair statuses. The High Court instructed the government to create this app for citizens to report potholes and mandated that action reports be made available on the Roads and Buildings Department’s website.

Status Report on Hyderabad Metropolitan Area

Additionally, the court requested a status report on the current state of potholes in the Hyderabad Metropolitan area and the measures taken to address them. Commuters have a harrowing time navigating the roads in the Old City, which got extensively damaged due to regular, incessant rain spells over the past month.

The roads in many stretches, such as Shamsheergunj Gausahala – Fateh Darwaza, Engine Bowli – Vattepally – Teegalkunta – Nawab Sahab Kunta, Hafeezbabagar Nagar A to D block, Tallabkatta, Vazir Ali Mosque to Hussainalam, and Mohammed Shukoor Kaman to Mahboob Chowk, have become considerably damaged. Big potholes have emerged, and with regular spells of rain, motorists are facing numerous problems.

Commuters’ Concerns

“A safe journey is not guaranteed. The journey is risky, and people are regularly falling while negotiating through the uneven roads, which may prove fatal,” said Nazeeruddin, a businessman and resident of Misrigunj. He pointed out that the Misrigunj road was dug up for pipeline works, and even though the works were completed three months ago, restoration works have not been taken up.

Another road user, Shaker Ahmed, a resident of Vattepally, said that due to rains, the road surface was washed away, turning the road into a bed of potholes. “The journey gives a back-breaking ride to the motorists. The GHMC did not take any temporary measures at least to repair it,” complained Ahmed.

Damaged Roads and Safety Concerns

The Tappachabutra – Karwan – Puranapul road has no exemption. There are innumerable potholes, and the manhole covers are damaged. “At any moment, the manhole covers can cave in and vehicles land in the pit. One can analyze the danger to road users,” complained Srisailam Goud, a resident of Karwan.

People are urging the GHMC to take up temporary repairs at least on busy roads and provide some respite to road users. The constant rain and poor road conditions have made daily commutes dangerous and uncomfortable.

Government Initiatives

The government’s development of the pothole reporting app is a step towards better road maintenance and accountability. Once implemented, this app will allow citizens to report potholes in real time and monitor the progress of repairs, ensuring that issues are addressed promptly. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure and ensuring safer roads for the public.
