Resistance Grows Against Musi Demolitions
AIMIM MLA Vows to Block Bulldozer Over Musi Project Demolitions
AIMIM MLA Threatens to Block Demolitions
Hyderabad: On Monday, September 30, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) Bahadurpura MLA, Mohd Mubeen, vowed to take a drastic stand against the Musi River developmental project. Mubeen threatened to lie down in front of a bulldozer if authorities attempted to demolish houses as part of the project in Hyderabad’s Old City. He emphasized that the government must not proceed with demolitions without first addressing the concerns of residents, particularly regarding compensation and alternative housing.
The statement came after Mubeen addressed the media near the Falaknuma police station, following the release of four AIMIM corporators who had been detained by Bahadurpura police. The corporators had protested against the alleged forceful acquisition of homes in the Kishanbagh and Bahadurpura areas, leading to their arrest. Mubeen stressed that the residents deserve justice and that the AIMIM party stands firmly with the people.
Standing with the Public Against Unjust Demolitions
Mubeen reassured the public that AIMIM’s MLAs and corporators would continue to support the residents of the affected areas. “All the AIMIM party MLAs and corporators are with the public. No one should fear. We will be the first to lie down in front of the bulldozer if the government tries to demolish houses without sorting out the issue of compensation and alternate housing,” said the Bahadurpura MLA. His statement highlighted AIMIM’s dedication to standing against what they perceive as unjust demolitions.
Mubeen also revealed that AIMIM’s delegation of MLAs had met with Hyderabad Collector Anudeep Durushetty to discuss the matter. The delegation urged the collector to ensure that the acquisition process adhered to the findings of the 2003 physical survey of the Musi River. The Bahadurpura MLA further explained that, according to Durushetty, a drone survey had recently been conducted to mark the houses identified for demolition. However, Mubeen demanded that the government first address the public’s concerns before moving forward with the project.
Congress MLA Criticizes Demolition Process
Just a day earlier, Congress leader and Khairatabad MLA, Danam Nagender, also voiced his opposition to the ongoing demolitions. Interestingly, Nagender criticized not just the Telangana government but also his own party for the way demolitions of so-called unauthorized structures were being handled. These demolitions were being carried out by the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRA).
Nagender stated, “The state government is standing with the poor. I will submit a representation to the chief minister requesting that those families who have been living on the banks of the Musi River shouldn’t be evicted. There needs to be in-situ development of 2BHK houses for them in the area where they are currently residing.” His remarks reflect a growing concern within political circles about the treatment of residents living near the Musi River.
Musi Riverfront Development Corporation’s Assurances
In response to the concerns raised by both AIMIM and Congress leaders, Telangana Musi Riverfront Development Corporation Managing Director, M. Dana Kishore, addressed the issue on September 28. Kishore made it clear that no residents would be forcefully evicted or mistreated while being relocated to newly constructed 2BHK houses. He emphasized that families would first be relocated to their new homes before any demolition of their existing houses would take place. This assurance was aimed at alleviating fears of forced displacement among residents living in the buffer zones and bed areas of the Musi River.
Kishore’s statement comes in light of the growing protests against the demolitions, with leaders like Mubeen and Nagender questioning the government’s approach to the Musi River project. He stressed that the objective of the project is not to create hardships for residents but to improve the living conditions and environmental quality of the area.
Political and Public Unrest Over Demolitions
The issue of demolitions along the Musi River has stirred political and public unrest in Hyderabad. Several leaders, including those from AIMIM and Congress, have expressed concerns over the government’s handling of the project. Both Mubeen and Nagender are advocating for a more humane and transparent approach, focusing on fair compensation, alternative housing, and community consultation before any demolitions take place.
As Hyderabad’s Musi River development project continues, it remains to be seen how the government will address the concerns of its critics and affected residents. The involvement of high-profile leaders in the protests suggests that this issue is far from resolved, and further developments can be expected in the coming weeks.
Conclusion: A Call for Justice
As the Musi River developmental works progress, AIMIM MLA Mohd Mubeen’s commitment to standing with the residents of Hyderabad’s Old City signals a strong opposition to the current demolition plans. His vow to block bulldozers, combined with Congress MLA Danam Nagender’s criticism, underscores the urgent need for the Telangana government to reconsider its approach. Ensuring transparency, compensation, and proper relocation plans are key to resolving the growing unrest surrounding the project.
