Tragedy Strikes as Wall Collapse Buries Four School Children in Rewa
In a heart-wrenching incident on Saturday, four young students from a private school lost their lives when a wall of an abandoned house collapsed in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh. The disaster unfolded in the Garh police station area, approximately 45 kilometers from the Rewa district headquarters.
The victims, identified as Anshika Gupta (5), Manya Gupta (7), Siddhart Gupta (5), and Anuj Prajapati (6), were students of Sunrise Public School, situated merely 20 meters away from the dilapidated structure. The children were on their way home after school when they encountered the tragic fate. As they passed by the old, abandoned house, its back wall suddenly gave way, burying them underneath.
A total of eight children, aged between five to seven years, along with a woman teacher, were caught in the collapse. Local residents quickly responded to the calamity, launching an urgent rescue operation in an attempt to save the trapped victims. Despite their efforts, the collapse proved fatal for four of the young students.
The Garh police station was alerted to the incident, but by the time officers arrived at the scene, it was too late to save the four children. The injured were promptly transported to a government hospital in Gangeo, located about 11 kilometers from the site of the incident.
A doctor at the Gangeo primary health care center informed IANS via phone that two injured children and one woman attendant were initially treated at their facility. Due to the severity of their injuries, they were subsequently referred to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital in Rewa for further medical attention.
Expressing deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives, Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla extended his condolences to the bereaved families. In a gesture of support, he announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs two lakh to each family that lost a child in the disaster. Additionally, Shukla has mandated a thorough investigation into the incident, instructing the district collector to conduct a detailed inquiry and submit a comprehensive report at the earliest.
The collapse of the abandoned house wall raises significant concerns about the safety and structural integrity of old and unused buildings, especially those in close proximity to schools and other public spaces. The tragedy underscores the urgent need for authorities to assess and address potential hazards posed by such structures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
