Sharad Pawar Criticizes Government Policies
Sharad Pawar Calls for Government Change Over Farmers’ Distress
NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar criticized the government in Maharashtra, accusing the ruling alliance of being indifferent to the economic distress faced by farmers. Speaking at a rally in the Gangapur constituency of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district ahead of the November 20 assembly polls, Pawar underscored the declining prices of essential crops such as sugarcane, soybean, and jowar. He urged citizens to vote for the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) to bring much-needed relief to the farming community.
Plight of Farmers Highlighted
Pawar stressed that farmers’ issues have been neglected under the current administration. “Farmers who provide food for the nation are facing severe hardship, but the ruling parties seem indifferent,” Pawar remarked. He cited alarming statistics, stating that over the past nine months, 950 farmers have taken their own lives due to financial burdens and their inability to recover their initial investments. This economic strain has exacerbated the cycle of debt and despair among farmers.
Pawar recalled the proactive measures taken during the NCP-Congress government, when farm loans totaling Rs 71,000 crore were waived to support farmers. He emphasized the urgent need for another round of loan waivers to alleviate the current crisis but claimed that the Union government has shown little interest in addressing the issue.
MVA’s Promises if Voted to Power
Sharad Pawar criticized the government for its lack of supportive policies and reiterated MVA’s commitment to implementing substantial welfare measures if they come to power. He outlined the MVA’s agenda, which includes conducting a caste census to ensure fair distribution of resources and entitlements. According to Pawar, this would help various communities secure benefits proportionate to their population and needs.
Additionally, Pawar mentioned MVA’s pledge to provide monthly financial assistance of Rs 3,000 to women and health insurance coverage of Rs 25 lakh for every family. He also reaffirmed the coalition’s promise to implement another round of farm loan waivers to reduce the economic burden on farmers.
Historical Context and Rally Highlights
At the rally, Pawar reminded voters of the economic and social initiatives undertaken during the previous NCP-Congress administration, contrasting them with the policies of the current regime. He accused the BJP of initially targeting over 400 seats in the Lok Sabha elections with the intent of amending the Constitution but noted that their plans were thwarted. “Despite their ambition, the BJP ended up relying on allies like Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) and N Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP to form the government,” he claimed.
The Gangapur constituency event saw Sharad Pawar criticizing the government and advocating for change to address the immediate needs of the farmers. The sitting BJP MLA, Prashant Bamb, faces competition from NCP (SP) candidate Satish Chavan.
Support for Former Health Minister Rajesh Tope
In a separate rally at Ghanswangi constituency, Pawar urged voters to support former Maharashtra health minister Rajesh Tope, praising his commendable service during the COVID-19 pandemic. He called Tope a capable leader who could bring significant improvements to the region if elected. Pawar also promised that the MVA would prioritize regional development, countering allegations of neglect under the current administration.
Tope accused the current ruling Mahayuti government, which includes the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP factions, of discriminating against his constituency and stalling its development. The Ghanswangi seat is set for a competitive election, featuring Tope from MVA, Shiv Sena’s Hikmant Udhan as the Mahayuti candidate, as well as independent candidates like BJP rebel Satish Ghadge and Sena (UBT) rebel Shivaji Chothe.
A Call for Political Change
Sharad Pawar’s criticism of the government culminated in a strong call to action. He urged citizens to vote for candidates who understand the challenges faced by farmers and are committed to delivering solutions. Highlighting MVA’s track record and promises, Pawar reinforced the need for a government that prioritizes the welfare of its citizens, especially the farming community.
Election Timeline and Expectations
The Maharashtra assembly polls are scheduled for November 20, with the results to be announced on November 23. As the political landscape heats up, Sharad Pawar’s criticism of the government is expected to resonate with voters who are seeking substantial change in policies and support for farmers.
