Telangana Sanctions 1 Lakh Urban Homes

Telangana Govt Approves 1 Lakh Indiramma Houses for Urban Hyderabad

The Telangana government has announced a major housing initiative by sanctioning one lakh houses under the Indiramma Housing Scheme for the core urban region of Hyderabad, including areas under the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), Malkajgiri, and Cyberabad Municipal Corporations.

The decision was taken during the state cabinet meeting held at the Dr. BR Ambedkar Telangana State Secretariat on Saturday, May 23. Along with urban housing, the government also approved 2.5 lakh Indiramma houses in rural Telangana under the scheme’s second phase.

The announcement is expected to benefit lakhs of economically weaker families struggling to own permanent housing in both urban and rural regions.

Telangana Sanctions 1 Lakh Urban Homes

1 Lakh Indiramma Houses for GHMC Core Urban Region

Housing Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy revealed that nearly 6 to 7 lakh applications had been received in the past for housing under the Indiramma scheme in Hyderabad’s urban municipal corporations. However, only 18,500 applicants possessed land ownership documents.

According to the minister, under the first phase of urban implementation, proceedings will be immediately issued to these 18,500 land-owning beneficiaries.

At the same time, the government plans to extend housing support to approximately 3 to 3.5 lakh eligible beneficiaries who do not own land, ensuring wider coverage among economically weaker sections.

LIG and MIG Categories Introduced

To streamline urban housing distribution, the Telangana government has divided beneficiaries into two categories:

  • Low Income Group (LIG)
  • Middle Income Group (MIG)

Among the proposed one lakh urban houses, the government has reserved 30 percent for the MIG category, ensuring balanced access for different income groups.

Officials clarified that these homes would be built close to the beneficiaries’ existing slum areas, unlike earlier housing models where apartments were reportedly constructed far from workplaces and residential communities.

The government aims to avoid disruption to livelihoods by keeping housing locations near employment zones.

400-420 Sq Ft Flats with Land Share

The Telangana government plans to construct 400 to 420 square feet flats under the scheme.

In addition to providing Rs 5 lakh assistance, beneficiaries will reportedly receive a share in the undivided land area of the housing location, which could improve long-term ownership value.

The detailed operational guidelines and beneficiary selection process for the second phase of the Telangana Indiramma Housing Scheme are expected to be announced in the coming days.

2.5 Lakh Rural Houses Approved

The cabinet also sanctioned 2.5 lakh Indiramma houses for rural Telangana.

According to the Housing Minister, every constituency in rural areas will receive 2,000 houses during the second phase.

Of these:

  • 500 houses will be reserved for pending applicants under the Gruha Laxmi Scheme launched during the previous BRS government.
  • Families who could not complete construction under the earlier Indiramma housing program during the tenure of former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy will also be considered.
  • Beneficiaries living in incomplete houses will be included.

The Housing Department has also identified around 14,800 hut-dwelling families across Telangana, who will reportedly be covered under the second phase.

Telangana to Join Centre’s RDSS Power Scheme

Another major cabinet decision involved Telangana joining the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) launched by the Union Ministry of Power.

The scheme is designed to improve:

  • Power distribution efficiency
  • Financial sustainability of DISCOMs
  • Quality electricity supply to households, farmers, and industries

The minister stated that the earlier government had initially agreed to participate but later withdrew from implementation.

Breakfast and Mid-Day Meals Expanded

In a major education welfare decision, the cabinet approved breakfast with milk and mid-day meals in:

  • Government schools
  • Government junior colleges

The scheme will begin from the upcoming academic year and is expected to benefit nearly 25 lakh students studying from Class 1 to Intermediate second year.

The state government has allocated Rs 800 crore in the budget for implementation.

The inclusion of fish curry in mid-day meals was also discussed during cabinet deliberations.

PRLIS Land Acquisition Gets Rs 587 Crore

The Telangana cabinet approved Rs 587 crore for land acquisition related to the Lakshmidevipally Reservoir, part of the Palamuru-Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Scheme (PRLIS).

The move aims to speed up irrigation infrastructure development and improve water availability in drought-prone regions.

Major Institutional Mergers Approved

The cabinet also approved the merger of:

  • District Cooperative Central Banks with TG MARKFED
  • Telangana Rural Infrastructure Corporation Ltd with HACA

The decision is expected to improve administrative efficiency and streamline cooperative functioning.

Rs 1,000 Crore for Godavari Pushkaralu

The Telangana government has sanctioned Rs 1,000 crore for preparations related to the upcoming Godavari Pushkaralu, scheduled to begin on June 26, 2027.

The funds are expected to be used for infrastructure, pilgrim facilities, sanitation, and transportation management.

Life Sciences Vision 2030

The cabinet also passed a resolution to transform Telangana into one of the top five life sciences hubs globally by 2030.

The government aims to:

  • Attract USD 25 billion in investments
  • Generate 5 lakh jobs in the life sciences sector

This initiative is expected to strengthen Hyderabad’s position as a leading biotechnology and pharmaceutical hub in India.

Conclusion

The Telangana cabinet’s latest decisions signal a strong push toward housing, education, infrastructure, and economic growth. The approval of one lakh urban Indiramma houses in Hyderabad and 2.5 lakh rural homes could significantly impact low-income families waiting for housing support.

At the same time, welfare measures such as expanded school meals and investments in irrigation, power reforms, and life sciences indicate a broader development strategy by the state government.
