Tragic Delhi Rains Update
Delhi Rains LIVE Updates: Woman and Child Die in Waterlogged Drain in Ghazipur
Delhi: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Thursday, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall in Delhi. On Wednesday, the national capital experienced significant rainfall, prompting the IMD to advise residents to avoid unnecessary travel. “Avoid going to areas that often face water logging,” read the advisory.
The IMD initially issued a ‘red alert’ for Delhi, effective until 8:30 am today, followed by an orange alert for the next 24 hours. “Moderate rainfall accompanied by moderate thunderstorms and lightning is likely to occur in North Delhi, Central Delhi, New Delhi, South Delhi, South-East Delhi, East Delhi, and the NCR within the next two hours,” stated the Indian Meteorological Centre (IMD) in the evening.
Forecast and Rainfall Persistence
The IMD forecasts that the rainy conditions will persist until August 5. Alongside Delhi, other areas of the NCR have also experienced thunderstorms and light rain. The maximum and minimum temperatures in Delhi on Thursday are expected to settle around 33 and 24.3 degrees Celsius, respectively.
Tragic Incident in Ghazipur
A tragic incident occurred in the Ghazipur area of East Delhi, where a woman and her child drowned after falling into a waterlogged drain following the heavy rainfall. The victims were identified as Tanuja (22) and her child, Priyansh (3), residents of Prakash Nagar Khoda Colony, Ghaziabad.
According to the police, “A call was received on Wednesday evening at about 8:12 pm regarding a woman and a child drowning in a drain. Based on the information received on Police Response Vehicle (PRV), the force immediately reached the spot.”
Upon arrival, it was discovered that Tanuja and her child, who were on their way to the weekly Budh Bazaar held in the Ghazipur Police Station area, fell into a semi-constructed, waterlogged drain and drowned. The drain, about 15 feet deep and 6 feet wide, posed a fatal hazard due to the heavy rain and waterlogging.
Waterlogging Issues and Response
Following the heavy rainfall, waterlogging issues surfaced in several places across Delhi. Pumping operations are ongoing to drain out water that entered the building of the Institute of Town Planners India. Significant waterlogging was also reported at ITO and other locations, causing disruptions.
Delhi Police issued a traffic advisory in view of waterlogging near Mother Dairy, Ganesh Nagar, and Patparganj Road, urging commuters to be cautious and avoid these areas if possible.
Emergency Measures and Precautions
Residents are advised to stay updated with weather forecasts and heed the advisories issued by the IMD and Delhi Police. With the continuation of heavy rainfall predicted, it is crucial to take necessary precautions to ensure safety. Avoiding travel to waterlogged areas and staying indoors unless necessary can help prevent accidents and mishaps.
Community Support and Solidarity
The community mourns the loss of Tanuja and Priyansh, highlighting the need for increased safety measures and better infrastructure to manage heavy rainfall and prevent such tragic incidents. The authorities are urged to expedite repairs and maintenance of critical infrastructure to mitigate risks posed by adverse weather conditions.
As Delhi grapples with the impact of heavy rains, the cooperation and resilience of its residents, along with the prompt response of emergency services, are vital in navigating these challenges. Continuous updates from the IMD and local authorities will play a crucial role in managing the situation and ensuring public safety.
