Manipur Crisis Congress Blames Shah
Congress Holds Shah Responsible for Manipur Crisis
The Congress party has blamed Union Home Minister Amit Shah for the escalating Manipur crisis, demanding his immediate resignation. Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, AICC spokesperson Jairam Ramesh accused the BJP-led government of failing to manage the violence-stricken state.
“The double-engine government has completely derailed. The home minister is directly responsible for the worsening situation in Manipur. We demand his resignation as it is his duty to restore peace,” Ramesh declared.
Congress Demands Modi’s Immediate Visit
The Congress urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to prioritize visiting Manipur before the upcoming Parliament session. Highlighting the lack of leadership during the Manipur crisis, Ramesh criticized Modi’s international engagements.
“Manipur has been burning since May 3, 2023, yet the prime minister has toured several countries without sparing a single visit to the state,” Ramesh said. “We urge him to meet political parties, civil society groups, and people in relief camps to understand their pain firsthand.”
Failures of BJP’s Double-Engine Government
Congress leaders also took aim at the BJP’s “double-engine government” in Manipur, accusing the state’s chief minister, Biren Singh, and Amit Shah of a lack of accountability. Jairam Ramesh questioned the partnership between Shah and Singh, labeling it a “strange jugalbandi” (duet).
“The BJP secured 32 out of 60 seats in 2022, yet within 15 months, Manipur is engulfed in violence,” Ramesh pointed out. “Over 300 people have died, and more than 60,000 have been displaced in what can only be described as a complete collapse of governance.”
Unprecedented Lawlessness in Manipur
Manipur Congress chief K Meghachandra Singh described the state as “lawless and headless.” He accused Chief Minister Biren Singh of failing to control abductions, killings, and unrest in the state.
“Innocent people, including women and children, have suffered immensely during the Manipur crisis,” Singh said. He also referred to a statement by Prime Minister Modi in 2017, where he claimed that those unable to ensure peace in Manipur should not govern the state.
Continued Violence and Political Fallout
The situation in Manipur remains volatile, with incidents of violence reported regularly. Recent events include the ransacking of Congress and BJP offices in the Jiribam district and attempts to storm the ancestral home of Chief Minister Biren Singh.
The ethnic strife between the Imphal Valley-based Meiteis and the hills-based Kuki-Zo groups has led to over 220 deaths and displaced thousands since May 2023.
“Manipur is suffering because of a lack of leadership and vision,” Meghachandra Singh stated. “The Manipur crisis is a national tragedy that demands urgent attention.”
Congress Calls for Accountability
The Congress has intensified its demand for accountability, urging the central government to take concrete steps to address the Manipur crisis. The party’s calls for Shah’s resignation and Modi’s intervention highlight the growing discontent over the government’s handling of the situation.
